Ed Sheeran Celebrates Ipswich’s Promotion to the Premier League
Ed Sheeran is thrilled about Ipswich Town’s promotion victory from Miami, and he promises to return to join the club’s celebration party in a few days.
The music superstar has been a passionate fan of the Tractor Boys since childhood, and Ipswich recently defeated Huddersfield 2-0 at home on May 4th to secure second place in the Championship, automatically earning a spot in the Premier League for the upcoming season.
Ipswich will return to the top tier of English football for the first time in 22 years, having climbed up from the third tier last season under the management of Kieran McKenna.
Sheeran couldn’t be at Portman Road Stadium because he had to perform at the Miami Grand Prix in Florida this weekend. Instead, the “Shape of You” singer woke up at 7 AM to watch the match from a luxury hotel and met some Ipswich fans—whom he coincidentally encountered at the Formula 1 track the day before, on May 3rd.
In a video shared on Instagram, Sheeran raised a toast to the Tractor Boys’ victory, surrounded by three cheering fans. They drank beer and danced as the team’s promotion was confirmed, and Ed even FaceTimed Ipswich players celebrating in the locker room.
“Where are you at, mate?” asked player George Hirst.
“I’m in Miami, don’t ask me how I’m paying for sponsorship!” Ed replied, as he sponsored the team’s kits this season and plans to continue his sponsorship for their Premier League season.
“I’ll be back next week; do you want to go out and celebrate?” the singer asked. “Of course!” Hirst responded.
Sheeran laughed joyfully and congratulated the Ipswich players: “I’ll get in touch with Marcus; we’ll find a place to meet. Congrats, you all did great!”
Not only that, Ed Sheeran dedicated a whole post to celebrate Ipswich’s promotion. The Grammy-winning artist wrote in the caption of his main Instagram post: “Promotion with Ipswich. Very emotional. Not long ago, I was sitting at Portman Road watching them lose in a League One match with 11,000 fans.”
“This is hugely significant for the club, vital for the town, and important for football, proving that anything is possible with belief and passion. Congratulations to all the players, everyone at the club, and of course, manager Kieran McKenna.”
This victory marks an important phase in Ipswich’s history over the past two years. They have climbed from League One to the Championship last season and then secured their place in the Premier League this season.
It’s worth noting that the last time Ipswich was in the Premier League was the 2001-02 season, making this the first time in 22 years that the Tractor Boys are back in the top flight of English football after a long wait.
