Controversial call for a knee-on-knee collision between Leafs’ Max Pacioretty and Detroit’s Alex DeBrincat draws the ire of Leafs Nation after retaliation not called.

Tonight’s Leafs/Red Wings game started with fireworks after the suddenly aggressive Max Pacioretty caught Detroit’s Alex DeBrincat with a knee-on-knee hit at the beginning of the first period.

The play occurred when DeBrincat made a sudden shift in an attempt to avoid a hit from Pacioretty. Unfortunately, he was not able to get his leg out or the way, being clipped by the Leafs veteran, who did not have an opportunity to avoid contact.

DeBrincat was shaken up on the play and required some attention from the Red Wings’ trainers, but would ultimately remain in the game.

Pacioretty was issued a 2-minute minor penalty as a result of his hit on DeBrincat, but unfortunately for the Leafs, Ben Chiarot, who should have been issued a retaliatory roughing penalty for going after Pacioretty, received nothing from the officials.

Leafs bench boss Craig Berube was livid with the officials for not calling Chiarot for roughing and allowing the two Atlantic Division foes to play 4-on-4.

This is not the first time that an NHL official has made a controversial decision that has benefitted the Leafs’ opponent, and I’m sure it won’t be the last.
