Major controversy has erupted involving the Canadian Soccer Federation, and now Team Canada may be stripped of their gold medal over cheating allegations.
Coaching staff and contractors that have been hired by the Canadian men’s and women’s national soccer teams have supposedly been caught engaging for years in spying. The biggest scandal surrounds the women’s gold-medal winning Olympic tournament in 2021, where it was determined that they were filming closed-door training sessions of the other country.
There was another time where the women’s team filmed Panama in July 2022 as they attempted to qualify for the Women’s World Cup in Australia.
Canada’s men’s and women’s soccer teams have relied on drones and spying for years, sources say
Coaching staff and contractors working with Canada’s men’s and women’s national soccer teams have been engaged for years in efforts to film the closed-door training sessions of their opponents, including during the women’s gold-medal winning Olympic tournament in 2021, sources told TSN.
The men’s side is also involved in this cheating scandal, as it was determined Canada used drones to record a U.S. training session during a November 15, 2019 game in Florida. Canada did lose that game 4 to 1.
Two years following the U.S. incident, someone spotted a drone over the Honduras side, so they had to stop their training session in Toronto for fears of being recorded.
FIFA will be launching an investigation into these allegations of spying, and should it be determined that Canada is guilty, they are at risk of having to forfeit any medals they may have won, including gold.
