Paul Bissonnette recently made a joke about his co-host Ryan Whitney as the Edmonton Oilers started the 2024-25 NHL season poorly. Bissonnette, a Toronto Maple Leafs fan, had fun at the Oilers’ expense after their rough 0-3 record. On Sunday, he posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying,
“Oilers are broken again. Whit had the balls to ask me about Woll on the new podcast coming out Tuesday buddy worry about your own team this might get ugly.”
Bissonnette made a joke following the news about Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll. Woll has been placed on injured reserve due to a lower body injury.
His placement on IR surprised many, as he was a contender to start against the New Jersey Devils on Thursday. Now, Woll will miss at least a week, with the earliest possible return on October 16 against the Kings.
Whitney, a loyal Oilers fan, is facing criticism as his team struggles. The Oilers lost 4-1 to the Calgary Flames, marking their third straight defeat.
The game started well for the Oilers when Jeff Skinner scored just 1:14 into the first period—his first goal with the team. However, two of their goals were disallowed, which almost affected their momentum.
The Flames took control in the second period when Rasmus Andersson scored to tie the game. In the third period, the Flames quickly added two more goals from Anthony Mantha and Justin Kirkland.
Connor Zary sealed the victory with an empty-net goal. Edmonton Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner made 25 saves but struggled to keep the team in the game.
Connor McDavid expresses frustration over Edmonton Oilers’ disappointing start to 2024-25 Season
Connor McDavid also expressed his frustration after the Edmonton Oilers lost their third straight game to start the 2024-25 NHL season, falling 4-1 to the Calgary Flames at Rogers Place.
“I’m sure there are lots of ways to explain it, but ultimately, it hasn’t been good enough,” McDavid said (via NHL.com). “I’ve said that numerous times here, up and down the lineup, that everybody can be better, and everybody will be better.”
McDavid also pointed out the team’s puck control issues. He added,
“…When you’re not clean with the puck, it’s tough to generate offence.”
Zach Hyman also noted that the team lost focus after the disallowed goals and encouraged his teammates to improve their scoring. Coach Knoblauch also mentioned a lack of connection in the team’s play, saying,
“If you’re missing one, then it just doesn’t work out…”
Edmonton Oilers will host the Philadelphia Flyers next and hope to end their losing streak.
