As of July 15th, 2024, the NHL has five teams currently over the salary cap, and some are the usual suspects.
They are the Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers, and Philadelphia Flyers.
While teams have a little bit of time to be ten percent over the NHL salary cap, which will be $88 Million for 2024-2025. The Capitals are in a rough situation.
The Capitals current cap situation has them $14 Million over the salary cap, at $102 Million, as they need to be cap compliant soon they’ll need to find ways of being compliant prior to the beginning of the season.
GM Chris Patrick needs to get creative before the last day of training camp.
The #ALLCAPS have a projected $102M Cap Hit, which is $14.2M over the cap.
They can start season up to $9.2M over the cap with Backstrom placed on LTIR, meaning they have $5M of space to create.

While Nicklas Backstrom will be on LTIR, prior to the puck drop, that should save the team $9.2 Million on the cap, which means they need to account for $5 Million more.
Which could turn up being T.J. Oshie which has an injury which could put him on LTIR as well, saving the team another $5.75 Million.
There could be dire consequences should Chris Patrick not get his house in order prior to puck drop at the end of training camp.
