Harry Potter TV version announces casting
HBO Studio is looking for children aged 9 to 11 in the UK and Ireland to take on the heroic roles of Hogwarts wizardry school in the Harry Potter television adaptation.
Harry Potter TV version is expected to be released in 2026
HBO Studio is looking for children ages 9 to 11 to cast directly in April 2025. Candidates will audition for roles in coming-of-age adventures and fighting evil at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
The producers are committed to diverse and inclusive casting, open to all races, ethnicities and gender identities.
All applicants must be residents of the UK or Ireland. They must submit two self-shot videos, including a poem or short story, not related to Harry Potter, and must use their real voice.
The Harry Potter television adaptation, announced last year by HBO’s parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, is expected to air at least seven seasons on Max, the streaming service formerly known as HBO Max.
Each season will closely follow each of the famous original books by writer J.K. Rowling. She will serve as executive producer on the series, which is expected to span a decade.
This announcement received many mixed reactions. Fans hope that the TV version will include all the details that were left out in the movie.
On the contrary, some viewers are concerned about whether to continue supporting J.K. Rowling regardless of her views on transgender issues or not.
In 2019, female author J.K. Rowling was criticized for expressing her opinion on a Devex article titled: Creating a more equal post-COVID-19 world for people who menstruate.
On Twitter (now renamed X), the female writer wrote: “People who menstruate, I think there must be another phrase to call them. Can anyone help me define it?”.
Then, she suggested some colloquial words from “Women” to “Wumben”, “Wimpund” and “Woomud”.
Netizens believe that Rowling’s posts discriminate against the transgender, intersex, and non-binary community by equating menstruation with women.
In addition, the new cast may face many challenges due to the large shadow of Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson.
Although a release date for the Harry Potter television series has not been set, David Zasla – CEO of Warner Bros Discovery, revealed in February that the show is aiming for a 2026 release.
