It was revealed Saturday that former Blackhawks head coach Mike Keenan had undergone open heart surgery and is recovering well.
Keenan or as many know him as «Iron Mike» was the head coach of the Italian national hockey team became their hockey consultant after the announcement was made. Keenan had an illustrious career as a head coach in the NHL where he began with the Philadelphia Flyers in 1984.
He coached the Blackhawks from 1988 through 1992 and made the playoffs every season and took the Hawks to several conference finals and one Stanley Cup final against the Pittsburgh Penguins. He then won the Stanley Cup in 1994 when he coached the New York Rangers during his only season with the team.
He coached 1386 NHL games, with a record of 672-531-147-36 and held a playoff record of 96-77 with 1 Stanley Cup win.
Besides the heart surgery, Keenan also had a battle with prostate cancer which appeared in 2018.
We wish Mr. Keenan all the best in his recovery and hope he will be back on the ice sooner than later.
