Chris Brown has apologized after angrily posting on Instagram about losing the Best R&B Album Grammy to renowned pianist and music producer Robert Glasper.

Posting a screenshot of his direct message to Glasper, Chris Brown wrote: “Congrats bro… I want to apologize for the insult at the Grammys. You were not the intended target and I know I was really rude and mean. You are amazing, congratulations. Hope you can provide for your family for the rest of your life. God bless my G.”

After Glasper won his fifth Grammy, beating Chris Brown for Best R&B Album, Brown posted about Glasper on Instagram, writing, “You guys are playing. Who the hell is this?” He then added, “I’m gonna keep kicking your ass! Honestly.”

Chris Brown also posted an image that read “Who the hell is Robert Glasper,” using the same photo and phrase that Glasper used in his self-deprecating manner. Last week, Glasper wrote on Instagram, “I see you’re wondering who Robert Glasper is! If you have questions, I have answers.”

A representative for Glasper did not respond to Variety’s request for comment.

Robert Glasper has received the 2023 Grammy for Best R&B Album

Glasper will perform at several festivals in Mexico, the United States, and Australia. In an October 2022 interview with Variety, Glasper spoke about the possibility of moving into jazz: “There’s never been anyone in the history of music who was a high-level musician in any other genre — like R&B or hip-hop or classical — who’s been able to go into the jazz world and make a splash and be respected. That doesn’t happen. To play jazz, you have to master your instrument to be able to play it, even at a mediocre level.” Chris Brown — who has been nominated for 21 Grammys and won one — joked: “I have to improve my skills… I’m going to start playing the harmonica.” He later reposted a TikTok video touting his accomplishments, including chart success and ticket sales. The end of the video shows a Google search for Glasper with the caption: “Who the hell is this thing?”.
