The Controversial Love Story Behind Filipino Music Icon Freddie Aguilar and His Young Wife Jovie Albao
In May 2025, the Philippines lost a beloved and iconic figure in the music world: Freddie Aguilar. The legendary musician, best known for his timeless anthem “Anak”, passed away at the age of 72 due to cardiac arrest caused by complications from kidney failure and pneumonia. While his musical legacy is cemented in Filipino culture, Aguilar’s personal life, particularly his second marriage, remains a source of public fascination and controversy.
Freddie Aguilar’s marriage to Jovie Albao drew national and international attention — not only because of their age gap but also due to the circumstances surrounding their union. When the couple tied the knot in 2013, Aguilar was 60 years old. Jovie, at the time, was just 16.
The significant age difference raised eyebrows, but what made the union even more controversial was the fact that Aguilar had to convert to Islam in order to legally marry Jovie. However, under Presidential Decree No. 1083, which outlines Muslim personal laws in the Philippines, marriage with a minor is permitted as long as the woman has reached puberty — a condition determined by menstruation. This legal loophole allowed the couple to proceed with their marriage despite widespread public backlash.
Prior to their marriage, Freddie faced legal troubles. In October 2013, just a month before the wedding, a case of qualified seduction was filed against him. The law applies when an adult engages in sexual relations with a virgin aged between 12 and 18 and holds a position of authority. Though charges were brought forth, the issue seemingly dissolved after Freddie’s conversion and legal marriage to Jovie.
In 2024, Freddie publicly greeted his wife on her 28th birthday through a Facebook post, showcasing several photos of the couple. The post served as a stark reminder of their unusual love story, sparking renewed discussion online.
Despite the controversies, the couple remained together for 12 years until Freddie’s death. Jovie paid tribute to her late husband through a heartfelt social media post: “I will live a good life so I can meet you in Jannah. This is not goodbye, just farewell for now.”
Freddie Aguilar is survived by Jovie and his four children from his first marriage. While his legacy in music remains untarnished, the circumstances surrounding his second marriage continue to ignite debates about cultural, religious, and legal boundaries in the Philippines.
