Gacuma detailed the incident in a letter addressed to Dr. Raul Canlas, the Chef d’Mission of the Philippine SEA Games delegation. He also confirmed that the letter would be submitted to the Ethics Committee of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and the House of Representatives. According to Gacuma, the confrontation stemmed from the PFA’s decision to replace national team fencer Alexa Larrazabal in the Individual Women’s ÉpĂ©e event.

Explaining the association’s side, Gacuma said the decision was not made lightly. “There were opportunities for our athletes to level up their play by being exposed to international competitions
Ms. Larrazabal fell short of the opportunity. She did not complete the requirements in a timely manner,” he said. He added that the athlete was reportedly unresponsive despite repeated reminders, which raised concerns among officials.

Gacuma said the decision angered Gomez, who allegedly sent multiple messages to a PFA director. The situation escalated when Gacuma approached Gomez at the venue to congratulate him on his victory in a shotgun event. According to Gacuma, the lawmaker reacted aggressively during what should have been a cordial exchange.

“I extended my right hand, and he squeezed it so hard while stepping on my left foot
He said, ‘(expletive) mo Rene, who gave you authority na palitan ’yung athlete?’” Gacuma recalled. He said he was shocked by the encounter and chose to walk away, especially given his health condition, having undergone bypass surgery and now living with a pacemaker.

Gacuma alleged that Gomez struck the back of his head as he turned away. “I really felt what seemed like a right hook with a closed fist on my nape. A lot of people saw it,” he said, noting that the incident was captured on CCTV. He further claimed that the confrontation did not end there, alleging that Gomez later grabbed his jaw and uttered more threats.

“I have consultations with private individuals. And I will do what is necessary to protect my family,” Gacuma said, stressing the seriousness of the situation.

For his part, Gomez admitted to what he described as “ungentlemanly deeds” but defended his actions as driven by concern for the athlete. He insisted that the decision to remove Larrazabal was “unjust, unwarranted, and damaging” to both the athlete and the country’s performance. Gomez questioned why Larrazabal was later allowed to compete in the Team Women’s ÉpĂ©e event and even assigned as anchor.

“For Gacuma, it is easy to cry victim of assault. But for Larrazabal, her chance
had been unjustly stolen from her,” Gomez said, adding that he would continue to fight for athletes’ rights.

The controversy remains under review as both sides stand firm on their positions.

Before the SEA Games controversy, Richard Gomez made headlines for a more personal reason. He shared a heartfelt birthday tribute for his wife, Lucy Torres, showing a softer side of the lawmaker. The article highlighted their enduring partnership and public support for one another.

In another related report, Gomez earlier admitted to the confrontation at the SEA Games. He explained his reasons for defending the removal of the top fencer and addressed public reactions to the incident. The article provided more context on his stance and justification.
