As she reflected on watching the Kansas City Chiefs win the Super Bowl LVIII earlier this year, alongside pal and collaborator Taylor Swift, the rapper, 24, admitted that she didn’t ‘have a clue’ what was going on during the football game.
‘I was incredibly confused. I’m still confused,’ she said while appearing on Friday’s episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
The performer, who gained popularity after going viral on TikTok in 2021, said all her prior knowledge about football ‘just went away’ when she walked into Allegiant Stadium.
‘I honestly would just wait until Taylor cheered,’ the In Ha Mood explained of how she knew when to applaud.
At the time, many social media users speculated that Ice Spice was confused based on her puzzled looks and bewildered expressions at various moments during the game.
Following Swift’s lead was a natural choice as the pop star, 34, has become very knowledgeable about football since she began dating Travis Kelce last year.
During her interview for Time’s 2023 Person of the Year, the 14-time Grammy winner credited her new relationship for introducing her to America’s favorite sport.
‘Football is awesome, it turns out,’ she gushed. ‘I’ve been missing out my whole life.’
Last season, she was somewhat of a good luck charm for the team as Kelce’s team won 10 of the 13 games that she attended.
In order to make it to the Super Bowl LVIII, Swift flew 5,500 miles across the globe from Tokyo, Japan.
During the game, she was joined by Ice Spice, Blake Lively and her longtime pal Ashley Avignone.
Ice Spice’s latest comments about Swift come after she defended their friendship during an interview with Rolling Stone.
In the interview, the rapper addressed the ‘rude’ claims the singer-songwriter, 34, is using her for clout and their friendship is fake.
‘[It’s] so rude to me,’ she said. ‘[Because] why would she not want to be my friend? Taylor f***s with me.’
Additionally, the Bronx native also discussed a variety of other topics including her purported feud with Nicki Minaj, beef with Latto as well as Y2K!, her debut album in her cover story.
In her cover story, both Spice and Swift spoke about their mutual respect and admiration for each other.
‘She’s so funny,’ Spice, whose real name is Isis Naija Gaston, said about the pop juggernaut. ‘I think our personalities mesh really well.’
In May 2023, the duo teamed up for a remix of Swift’s song Karma and released an accompanying music video.
Spice told Rolling Stone that she ‘hysterically cried’ when Swift called about working together.
‘I remember my manager called me, and he usually texts, but he called, and he’s like, “You ready for this one?” And I’m thinking it’s going to be some bad news or something,’ she recalled.
He’s like, “Taylor Swift has a record for you to get on from her album.” I’m playing it cool on the phone. I’m like, “Oh, that’s cool. Super cool.” And then I hang up the phone, and I’m hysterically crying. I’m in my walk-in closet, and I’m like, “Bro, this is not real life.”‘
For Spice’s cover story, Swift also responded and shared high praise for her friend’s creativity, curiosity and commitment.
‘I love when I meet a new artist who takes a keen interest in not just the music, but the music industry and how it works,’ she told the publication.
‘I’ve seen how our industry tries to convince artists that they’re better off just being creative and making music and letting the labels and the management do the rest,’ she continued.
‘Seeing Ice lean into the strategic, financial, and business aspects of her career is really exciting for me. The more artists learn about the inner workings of the music industry, the more power they can have in their creative world,’ she said.
‘I knew based on the questions she asked and the observations she made that she didn’t just want to be a passenger in her own career,’ she added. ‘She wanted to be the driver of it.’
The pair also proved they not only have a musical connection but a personal one as well.
After releasing their collaboration on Karma, Spice and Swift started getting close after the rapper joined her on stage as a surprise guest for her Eras Tour concert in New Jersey.
Shortly afterwards, Spice revealed that she and Swift ‘talk all the time.’
She also said she was honored that Swift told her that she was a fan of her January 2023 EP Like…?
‘I was like, “You f*** with my project? Like what? She’s so sweet,’ she told The Guardian. ‘I was so obsessed with how humble she was and willing to work. She gives me so much advice. We talk all the time and she’s so funny.’
During her cover story, Spice also spoke about how their friendship withstood the drama caused by Swift’s now-ex, The 1975 frontman Matty Healy, when he made ‘racially insensitive’ comments.
‘I actually was late as f*** to that,’ Spice admitted to the outlet. ‘I didn’t know about it until a month after or something like that. He apologized multiple times, but I didn’t realize how big of a deal it was to other people. I feel like people just wanted something to be mad about, I guess. I wasn’t angry or sad or anything. I was just kind of confused. I never really cared about that.’
Even though Swift and Healy’s romance is now well over, Spice said she still listens to The 1975: ‘I am a huge fan.’
In spite of it all, their friendship is still going strong as Spice said she had such a fun time with Swift, whom she called her ‘sis,’ at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards last September.
She told Variety: ‘That’s my sis. We was talking about a bunch of things. She’s so funny. We was sipping on a little something something. Just chatting, vibing.’
Most recently, Swift and her NFL star boyfriend Travis Kelce went to support Spice at Coachella during her set for the weekend one in April.
