From Stage to Hospital: The Painful Journey That Led to Cocoy Laurel’s Tragic Death

Beloved singer-actor Victor “Cocoy” Laurel, once a shining star of the Philippine entertainment industry, died on June 14, 2025, at the age of 72. The cause? Cardiac arrest brought on by multiple organ failure, a tragic end to a long and painful medical journey that began with a seemingly minor injury two decades ago.\

Cocoy Laurel - That Old Feeling

According to David Laurel, Cocoy’s younger brother, the artist’s health began its slow decline after a performance of the musical The Miraculous Virgin of Caysasay in 2005. What started as back pain after the show turned out to be a debilitating spinal injury. That injury marked the beginning of years filled with physical suffering, emotional trauma, and growing medical complications.

“He already had a back problem. But he was not yet doubled over,” David recalled in a heartfelt interview. “He could walk normally, no limp. He would sit up straight for some time. He was okay. But as it grew over time, that’s when I think the complications came in.”

Doctors had advised Cocoy to undergo surgery, but fear held him back. David revealed that Cocoy had been traumatized by a past medical experience, leading to a deep mistrust of doctors. Although painkillers were prescribed, they eventually stopped working.

Despite enduring chronic pain, Cocoy never lost his passion for life. He channeled his energy into painting, singing, and serving the Church. Even when his physical body weakened, his spirit remained vibrant and generous.

“Cocoy is very, very generous with his gifts,” shared his sister, Iwi Laurel, herself a singer known in the 1980s. “He loved to teach us—voice, acting, even painting. He was our mentor. He was my first voice teacher and coach. Very loving, very gentle.”

The Laurel family belongs to one of the most prominent political and artistic clans in the Philippines. Cocoy was the son of former Vice-President Salvador “Doy” Laurel and theater actress Celia Diaz-Laurel. Throughout his life, Cocoy remained dedicated to his family, especially his father’s political causes.

David revealed that Cocoy was instrumental in their father’s campaign trail, especially during the politically tumultuous years. “He was the secret weapon of Doy Laurel,” David said proudly. “He would sing, play the guitar, and entertain people from morning to night in campaign sorties across the country. His charisma was unmatched.”

But Cocoy’s charm and musical talent weren’t confined to political rallies or the theater stage. David fondly recounted memories of their travels—how Cocoy would suddenly break into song in restaurants, captivating both locals and tourists.

“One time we were in Italy, eating at my dad’s favorite restaurant. Out of nowhere, Cocoy starts singing ‘Volare.’ Tourists joined in. The musicians played with him. It became a magical moment,” David recalled. “Or when we were on a cruise… he grabbed the mic, started singing, and within minutes, foreigners were dancing on the tables.”

These spontaneous performances showed not just his showmanship but also his deep connection with people. Cocoy had a rare ability to bring joy to strangers, a trait his family cherished deeply.

Despite his fading health, Cocoy remained optimistic and never lost his sense of humor or kindness. He was a beloved brother, son, teacher, and artist, remembered by many for his talent, warmth, and unwavering generosity.

His cremated remains were laid to rest on Thursday, June 19, during a private inurnment attended by close family and friends.

In the end, Cocoy Laurel’s life was not only about fame or political lineage—it was a testament to resilience, creativity, and love. His journey, though marked by suffering, was equally filled with music, laughter, and deep emotional connection. As his brother David put it, “He brought light wherever he went. Even in pain, he never stopped giving.”
