Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid found himself in the middle of an altercation with LA Kings’ Alex Laferriere during their game on Monday. McDavid’s challenge was met with retaliation by the Kings forward who received a penalty for it.
With 2:55 left in the second period, McDavid impeded Laferriere who was chasing the puck. He was then picked off his feet and thrown to the ice. Laferriere was roughed up by Kasperi Kapanen who stood up for his captain.
Laferriere and Kapanen received minor penalties but Edmonton had the edge with McDavid and Leon Draisaitl on the four-on-four. The Oilers scored via an assist and goal from the two stars. The game ended 1-0 in favor of the Oilers.
After the game, Kings coach Jim Hiller said that his forward’s penalty was unnecessary and that it could have been avoided.
“One really poor penalty by Laferriere,” Hiller said to reporters. “It was a really bad penalty even though it got evened up. That was probably the moment in the game I liked the least. But other than that, we played hard.”
Connor McDavid on Oilers getting better of the Kings in playoff calliber game
The Oilers and the Kings have faced each other in three consecutive Stanley Cup playoffs and Edmonton has bested them 3-0. While a Monday fixture isn’t supposed to be hotly contested, the two teams gave it their all with Connor McDavid saying that it felt like a playoff game.
“It’s always that way with L.A., always that kind of grinding, low-scoring, low-event hockey,” McDavid said. “We know how to play these games with them.
“I thought we maybe beat them at their own game today. Just playing patient, finding a way to get one, and holding on for a win.”
In the last three and a half seasons, the Oilers have won 21 out of 32 matchups. The Kings also haven’t had much success in their opponents’ home as Monday’s defeat was the 12th loss in the last nine regular seasons.
The win kept Edmonton second in the Pacific Division with 57 points, just behind the Vegas Golden Knights. The Kings are a close third at 51 points with two games on hand.
