A frightening moment occurred at Yankee Stadium while Giancarlo Stanton was at bat and umpire Nick Mahrley was behind him.
MLB umpire Nick Mahrley was forced to leave the game during Sunday’s game between the Colorado Rockies and New York Yankees after being hit in the head with a broken bat.
The incident happened at the bottom of the fifth inning, with the Yankees leading 4-3.
Yankees star hitter Giancarlo Stanton made contact with the ball as his bat shattered into pieces as he hit a single into left field off Rockies starter Austin Gomber.
Part of that shattered bat went backward towards the umpire.
The barrel of Giancarlo Stanton’s bat snapped off at the handle and rotated around to hit Mahrley in the neck and the side of his head.
The force knocked Nick Mahrley’s mask off.
Umpire Nick Mahrley would be placed on a stretcher and sent off to a local hospital.
It was later reported that Mahrley was conscious and able to move his arms as he was placed on a stretcher with his head and neck in a brace.
Major League Baseball Gives Update on Umpire Nick Mahrley
Nick Mahrley took a nasty hit to his neck and head following a broken bat flying his way during the Yankees game.
After the Yankees won the game, 10-3, Major League Baseball said umpire Nick Mahrley had been diagnosed with a concussion and would not work his next assigned series.
“We’re all hoping for the best with Nick, and we’ll see what goes on,” Yankees slugger Aaron Judge said, per ESPN. “They got a tough job back there, man. It’s not easy, you got both benches yelling at you throughout the game on balls and strikes. You got to make split-second decisions.
“You got players mad at you, you’re trying to do your best and then to kind of get squared up on the side of the head with the bat, it’s tough. To see him get carted off wasn’t easy, but just definitely hoping for the best.”
