On February 8, 2009, right before the 51st Grammy Awards, Rihanna suddenly canceled her performance at the last minute without any explanation, leaving the organizers in shock. Just a few hours after fans realized Riri’s absence, everyone soon understood the reason.

Eight years later, Chris finally revealed the details of what happened that night, through the documentary “Chris Brown: Welcome to My Life”. According to him, Riri’s jealousy was at the root of it all when she accidentally read a text message from Chris’s ex-girlfriend. “She went crazy, threw the phone, said ‘I hate you!’ and tried to slap me. But I was so angry that I clenched my fist and hit her until her lips bled. For a moment, I was shocked at myself and thought: ‘What did I do to her?’. Then she spat in my face, there was also blood… that made me even angrier. I lost control and hit her again. When she hit me back, I bit her hand because I was driving. It was only when I saw her bruised face online that I told myself: ‘I didn’t do that! That’s not me!’. I hated myself and that thought haunts me to this day.”

In the story, although he felt very remorseful and admitted his mistake, Chris still implicitly blamed Rihanna for being sensitive and easily angered: “I still love Rihanna, but I will try to be honest, at that time we were both very angry and wanted to hurt each other. Then, when we sobered up, we asked ourselves: What the hell were we doing?”.
