Find out how it all came to an end.
Corey Perry remains with the Edmonton Oilers, looking for another championship before he hangs up the skates, but there are already talks about whether or not the veteran forward should be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Adam Proteau of the Hockey News recently asked the question and though it remains an opinion piece on what he thinks of Perry’s career, at one point in his text, he reveals what came of the whole contract termination situation with the Chicago Blackhawks.
At the time of his removal from the Blackhawks, there were crazy rumors about Perry’s involvement with the mother of one of his teammates, rookie Connor Bedard. Those rumors were proved to be false and refuted by Perry and the Blackhawks, but neither the player nor the team would shed much light into what exactly happened. There were reports that Perry was involved in an “alcohol fuelled” incident in Columbus following a game against the Blue Jackets but there were only vague descriptions of the incident.
Earlier this offseason, Hawks insider Mark Lazerus revealed how the sensitive story remains a mystery and he wondered out loud how much the Oilers knew before they signed him to a contract in late January.
Despite Perry’s success and ability to rebound in Edmonton, much focus remains on this failure with the Blackhawks, though we do not know a lot about what really happened…However, Proteau did mention the resolution on the saga in his article when he revealed:
“The Chicago Blackhawks also terminated his contract in November 2023, saying he violated his contract and team policies intended to promote a safe and professional work environment. Both parties reached an undisclosed settlement afterward, according to the Associated Press.”
No mention of whom settle with Perry, and perhaps the Blackhawks.
You have to wonder how much that cost him!
Perry remains in Edmonton and will look to help his team make it all the way to hoisting the Stanley Cup in 2025, despite his string of bad luck (not only off the ice, but also in the Finals.) Perry unfortunately set a new, unfortunate, record when he took part in the Stanley Cup final. When Perry faced the Panthers this past June, it was a Stanley Cup Final appearance with his fifth different team, having previously played in the Finals with the Anaheim Ducks, Dallas Stars, Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning. He did hoist the Cup in 2007 with the Ducks, but that’s where the success rate ends. When reaching the Finals in 2020 with Dallas, in 2021 with Montreal in 2022 with the Lightning, and then this past summer with the Oilers, Perry lost all four times.
Through 19 NHL seasons, Perry has played in 1,311 games and recorded 429 goals to go along with 476 assists for 905 points, having won the Stanley Cup in 2007 with the Anaheim Ducks.
And I guess we can kinda say that he won in the contract termination situation with the settlement remaining confidential.
