NHL fans react as Edmonton Oilers prospect lineup loses 6-1 to NHL-caliber Jets lineup (Image Source: Imagn)
In a lopsided preseason matchup, the Edmonton Oilers prospect lineup suffered a heavy defeat, falling 6-1 to the strong NHL-caliber Winnipeg Jets team.
The Jets dominated the opening period, setting the tone for a three-goal outburst. By the end of the second period, the Jets established a commanding 4-0 lead and outshot the Oilers 27-13.
Brad Lambert made it 5-0 for the Jets in the third period before Adam Lowry’s shorthanded goal put them up 6-0. Although the Edmonton Oilers scored a goal, it was little too late to change the outcome as they succumbed to a heavy defeat.
The disparity in lineups of both teams led many to anticipate the result before the game had even started. Here’s how fans on X/Twitter reacted to the Oilers’ defeat.
One tweeted:
“If these are Edmonton’s prospects, decade of darkness part 2 incoming.”
Another chimed in:
“Surely people wont overreact to a game that saw the Bakersfield Condors play the Winnipeg Jets.”
“Why do teams ice an AHL calibre lineup to “have a look at the young kids” against an NHL laden lineup?! I’ll never understand lol,” one X user wondered.
Here are some of the other top reactions on X:
“Wowtime to panic, season’s over. Finished, ” one humorously said.”
“Jets played their regular season lineup pretty much. But man, skinner 🙄,” another posted.
“Well, as I said after the Calgary games, better now than in the regular season. Thats what pre-season is for after all. Ironing out the weak links. See you guys in three days. Last year, I don’t think we lost a pre-season game, and we started the season off badly. So this is good,” commented another.
Kris Knoblouch reflects on Edmonton Oilers’ defeat
Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch acknowledged the experience gap between his team and the Jets. He noted that the matchup served as a valuable test for the Oilers’ prospects.
Knoblauch was realistic about the outcome, suggesting that many of their players on the ice won’t be on the final roster.
“They were a much more veteran team, almost their NHL lineup, which is a good test for our guys,” said Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch (via The Daily Press).
“A lot of guys on the roster tonight will not be on our team. We were just trying to make the most out of the situation.
The Edmonton Oilers continue their preseason against the Seattle Kraken at Rogers Place on Saturday.
