The question of whether the Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares will become a Hockey Hall of Famer someday has sparked debate among NHL fans.

On Saturday, the official NHL on X account posted a poll asking,

“Is John Tavares on his way to being a member of the @HockeyHallFame someday?”

This ignited passionate responses from hockey fans on social media.

The 33-year-old center has played 15 seasons in the NHL, amassing 456 goals and 1,040 points in 1,109 games. John Tavares was named the NHL First All-Star Team in 2014-15.

However, some fans believe stats alone don’t make a Hall of Famer.

As one fan wrote,

“No doesn’t have enough individual awards and no cup.”

Indeed, Tavares lacks major individual honors like the Hart Trophy for NHL MVP or the Art Ross Trophy for leading scorer. He also hasn’t won a Stanley Cup.

Another noted,

“No. He’s been a pretty good player throughout his career. But HOF material? Absolutely not.” on X.

Here are some fan reactions:

“If he hits 500 goals he’s in. Regardless of what you think of him that’s a huge achievement. Less than 50 players have 500. It’s hard to believe he won’t be able to hit that at this point.” one fan wrote on X.

“No cups, no individual hardware, except that one year he tied with Jamie Benn for most points. Not enough of a career resume.” another fan wrote.

“Based on who’s been getting heavy consideration lately, he’s on his way.” a user wrote.

“No. If he wins a cup, maybe” another user commented.

John Tavares Foundation contributes $37,500 to support backpack program

The John Tavares Foundation, founded in 2020 by John Tavares and his wife Aryne, has donated $37,500 to the PIE backpack program for 2024. This contribution will provide 1,500 backpacks full of school supplies to students in need across Toronto.

The donation was announced on the foundation’s Instagram page, stating:

“We are thrilled to share that the John Tavares Foundation has donated $37,500 to the PIE Education backpack program for 2024!… This achievement would not have been possible without your unwavering generosity and belief in our mission.”

The backpacks will go directly to Toronto Housing to support children living in underserved communities. By providing these students with the tools required for academic achievement, the John Tavares Foundation is helping build a brighter future for the city’s youth.
