The LA Dodgers’ acquisition of lefty ace Blake Snell on Tuesday night has caused a stir in Major League Baseball, eliciting a variety of responses from fans and analysts, ranging from disbelief to worry. Snell, who has won the Cy Young Award twice, reportedly accepted a five-year, $182 million deal with the Dodgers that also involves a $52 million bonus upon signing.
This agreement represents the first nine-figure deal of the offseason and contributes to a strong Dodgers pitching staff that includes top pitchers Tyler Glasnow and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, along with the anticipated return of Shohei Ohtani.
On Wednesday, Xavier Scruggs, a former professional baseball player and now MLB analyst, discussed why Blake Snell moved to Los Angeles while speaking on MLB Network Radio.
“The Dodgers are doing that thing again, that thing where they take all the best players and they start stacking them on their own team,” Scruggs said. “It’s crazy to me that they go out and win this World Series and then now you go and get one of the best free agent starters available, probably the best down the stretch over the last 14 starts.”
The departure of Snell is especially difficult for the San Francisco Giants. After finishing the 2024 season strongly with an outstanding 1.23 ERA in his most recent 14 games, Snell chose to ignore his deal with the Giants and test the free-agent market.
Many fans and observers have pointed out the advantage teams like the Dodgers have in free agency since they can dominate without considering the financial challenges smaller market teams face.
“The idea that the best team in 2024 goes out early in this offseason to add an arm tells me that they are very serious about continuing to get better,” Scruggs said. “Another thing I think about, like my quick reaction is: Man, I feel sorry for the Giants.
“A Giants team that just can’t seem to get the free agent, the big one, and keep them there. For him to go over to a team in their own division that they are gonna be fighting against so often is just crazy within itself.”
Despite the criticism, Dodgers fans maintain that trading for Snell was essential to strengthen their pitching staff following a season full of injuries and stay competitive at the highest level.

Blake Snell’s agreement is anticipated to have important consequences for the free-agent market. His prompt decision to sign with the Dodgers stands in stark contrast to last year’s prolonged talks when he ended up signing with the Giants shortly before Opening Day.
This year, he took advantage of his excellent performance and high market demand to secure a contract that many believe will change his life.
Snell’s talents combined with the Dodgers’ assets could give them a significant advantage, potentially making them a dominant force as long as their top pitchers remain injury-free all season.
