I’d like to get maybe a third or fourth,” mentioning that as long as they keep winning and bringing on those players who give them a better shot at winning, he is happy.

Well, one cannot argue with that logic. Winning sure does cure-all, and for Muncy, having that championship mindset is all that matters. Max Muncy clarified that every team can spend big; it’s just that the teams have to be willing. “Every team makes money; it’s just a matter of which team is willing to reinvest in the ball club,” says Max Muncy.

However, what is irking the fans is not the big spending by the Dodgers, but how they are spending—through deferred money. Snell’s contract of $182 million has $66 million deferred through 2046. This is similar to what the team did for Shohei Ohtani, who set an MLB record last year. According to him, the rival fans are acting like the Dodgers have already won the next season and the year after. He cited that MLB has the longest streak in history without a repeat winner and that fans should just pump the brakes. Not just that, Ben Verlander even gave the real reason fans are mad.

Ben Verlander said on the Flippin Bats podcast, “You’re not mad at the Dodgers; you’re mad at the cheap franchise that you root for.” Harsh, but it also makes sense because deferred money isn’t just a concept limited to Dodgers. Instead, Verlander asked fans to be mad about the team owners who take in TV revenue and luxury tax payouts from the bigger teams and do nothing, similar to what Max Muncy said.
