Emma Watson, who is popular for her role as Hermione Granger, is one of the most skilled and elegant actresses in the entertainment industry. The actress started her career with the Harry Potter franchise and was part of the series till the end. The actress has also been a model and a women’s rights activist. She was critically acclaimed for her role in Perks of Being a Wallflower in 2012. Her fairy tale-based movie, Beauty and the Beast was a commercial hit and was also nominated for Academy Awards.
Among the numerous movies done by the actress, she has been very particular about not using drugs on-screen and avoiding nudity. Watson opened up in an interview about the reason for her choice of movies.
Emma Watson is against Drugs and Nudity On-Screen
The Circle fame has shared in several interviews that she is very open-minded about the roles offered to her. However, there are some boundaries that the actress has not crossed yet. In an interview with The Times, she said,
“I’m not going to get my kit off or snort cocaine in a film, just to leave Hermione behind. I’m not going to do something shocking because I’m so paranoid or insecure that I can’t play another role convincingly. I don’t want everyone to forget me as Hermione. I’m really proud of her.”
She also shared in another interview with The Scotsman that she can work on the idea of nudity if the role is appropriate. She said,
“I’ve been saying since I was 16 that if it’s an interesting character and important for the character development, and of course if it’s important to the story, then I’ll do it because I’m an actress and that’s it really,”
Emma Watson has left the Harry Potter series, however, the character of Hermione stayed with her. Hence it seems like it has become difficult for her to break the barriers and take up new and experimental roles.
Being part of the Harry Potter series for a long time had both pros and cons for the actress. The movie provided her with stardom at a very young age, but after playing one role for so long, she became comfortable with it. Hence, when Emma Watson started doing other movies, she found it intimidating.
Watson said on The Jonathan Ross Show,
“I didn’t know if I believed in myself yet as an actress, outside the role of Hermione, which I knew I could do, and I did for a long time. I didn’t know if I had other people in me or not. I did doubt myself a little bit. I think I’d just played one person, who in many ways was similar to my own personality, and I played her for ten years and I got so comfortable doing that, that the idea of coming out and playing somebody else was terrifying.”
She later told Daily Mail that the 2012 movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower and its director Stephen Merchant helped her in breaking out of her previous image.
“After the Harry Potter series, I didn’t feel very confident in myself as an actor. It’s rather sheer luck that I’ve improved now but back then, I needed someone to believe in me, and Stephen really did.”
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is available for streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
