“Habs fans overvalue every prospect”: Fans react to Ivan Demidov’s hype as Canadiens fans’ high hopes garner attention
Montreal Canadiens’ fifth-overall pick in 2024, Ivan Demidov, has gotten plenty of attention, given his potential to be an impact player in the NHL. While the hype is warranted, based on Ivan Demidov’s play in the KHL, some fans may seem a little over-enthusiastic about his potential impact on the Habs.
Meanwhile, some fans don’t seem overly convinced regarding Ivan Demidov’s potential impact in Montreal. Here’s a look at what some of these fans have had to say:

While some fans expressed their skepticism about Demidov, others seemed genuinely excited about the prospect of having a top prospect like Ivan Demidov don the red sweater. Here’s what these fans had to say:

“He was a steal at 5, Habs got a good one,” a fan commented.

Montreal Canadiens fans may need to wait another season before seeing Ivan Demidov in North America.
Demidov still needs to fulfill his contractual obligations before arriving in North America. Perhaps the Habs can work something out with Demidov’s Russian club to make the transition smoother.
Ivan Demidov draws intriguing comparisons
TSN analyst Craig Button compared Demidov with Philadelphia Flyers prospect Matvei Michkov. NHL.com captured Button’s words:
“I think he’s a better player than Michkov.”
The comparison with Michkov is quite interesting, considering the hype surrounding Michkov as well. But Button made another very intriguing comparison:
“He’s Nikita Kucherov to me. He can pass, he can shoot. He’s brilliant. Like Kucherov, they step out onto the ice and they’re immediately dangerous.
“The puck ends up on their stick and it’s like, buckle up, pay attention, you’re going for a ride.”
The comparison with Kucherov is quite an endorsement. Last season, Kucherov joined the Edmonton Oilers Connor McDavid as the first players to notch up 100 assists in a season in over 30 years.
If Demidov can live up to that hype, the Canadiens will have a superstar in the making. Demidov is still very much a young player. So, he will need time to develop his skills in the NHL before he can truly become the impact player fans hope he can become.
