The debate over the greatest point guard in the history of the NBA seems to always return to Magic Johnson versus Steph Curry. While most LA Lakers fans have stayed loyal to Johnson over the years, there is one Southern California native and former Lakers player who believes the Golden State Warriors star holds the edge when comparing the two talents.
Lonzo Ball was a guest on Wednesday’s episode of the “Unapologetically Angel” podcast and discussed a range of topics with WNBA star Angel Reese. Asked to list his Mount Rushmore of NBA players, Ball named Lebron James, Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’Neal, but hesitated before providing his final answer.
“I would go Magic, but em, it’s looking like Curry might have to find his way in there honestly,” said Ball (33:15).
Ball provided an interesting five-point breakdown to justify his stance on why Curry was the superior player.
“His resume, and the way he changed the game, he is the best shooter ever, carried USA,” said Ball. “And he got the rings to back it up too.”
Magic Johnson boasts an impressive resume. The Michigan native is a three-time MVP, a 12-time All-Star and has five NBA championships to his name. Yet, it is hard to argue with Ball’s points.
Since making his debut in the NBA in 2009, Steph Curry has revolutionized the way the game is played with many teams switching to a faster-paced style with a greater focus on the 3-point shot.
Curry has won four titles with the Warriors and has been named the league MVP on two occasions. He is the NBA’s all-time leader in 3-pointers made with a whopping 3,807, which is 812 more than the second-place James Harden.
Steph Curry was instrumental in leading Team USA to their fifth consecutive gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games this summer. The 6-foot-2 sharpshooter scored 36 points and led a late-game rally and stunned Serbia in the semifinals. He followed that up with a dominant 24-point performance against France in the finals.

With the departure of veteran guards Klay Thompson and Chris Paul this offseason, there were concerns about how the new-look Warriors roster would fare in a competitive Western Conference. Led by 10-time All-Star Steph Curry, the Warriors are off to a strong start and currently sit third in the West with a 12-6 record.
Last week, Warriors’ guard Moses Moody spoke with Sportskeeda’s Mark Medina about Curry’s leadership qualities and how his personality has helped some of the team’s new players adjust to life in the Bay Area.
“Steph is Steph. He is the player that he is. But he is also a really good person. He’s teaching and coaching with all the gems that he gives on the plane and in the locker room in converstations,” said Moody.
Golden State’s offense is clicking early in the season and a big factor is Steph Curry’s ability to adapt his style and work alongside a new group of players. The Warriors rank fourth in the West with 116.8 points per game. Curry currently leads the roster in points (22.4) assists (6.5) and steals (1.6) per game.
