Ed Sheeran is named the UK's most listened to artist for the seventh time

Ed Sheeran has been named the UK’s most listened to artist for the seventh year running as British artists dominate a new chart compiled by music licensing company PPL.

The Suffolk-based singer-songwriter tops the charts for most songs heard on British radio, television and in public places.

Sheeran, 33, has topped the same chart on seven different occasions, selling more than 150 million records worldwide since his debut album + in 2011.

Accepting his position, he said: “Thank you for naming me the most listened to artist of the past year.”

“Thank you to my team, not just me, but all the other artists I work with – I’m happy you get this recognition.”

His latest appearance at the top of the PPL chart is his third in as many years and sees him eclipsing pop star Taylor Swift.

British-Albanian star Dua Lipa – whose third album Radical Optimism was released in May – also ranks third.

Elsewhere Scottish DJ and producer Calvin Harris, whose work includes collaborations with Lipa, Rita Ora and Rihanna among others, takes fourth place.

In fifth place, French DJ David Guetta is the only non-British artist in the top six, with Sir Elton John coming in at number six. /Telegraph/
