Hockey icon Don Cherry shared his thoughts about Quebec City being overlooked for an NHL franchise amid rumors about a potential return to Atlanta.
Cherry pointed out that Quebec City boasts a beautiful arena and questioned why there isn’t a team there, suggesting that financial backing exists, especially with local telecommunications companies that could support a franchise.
On his “Grapevine” podcast, Cherry expressed excitement about the prospect of the Montreal Canadiens playing in Quebec City, stating that the games would likely sell out due to the strong local fan base.
“I still have no idea why there’s no team in Quebec. It is the beautiful, lovely arena. Don’t tell me that there’s no money in Quebec City. Imagine (Montreal) Canadiens going (to play) in there,” (2:04).
Cherry also raised concerns about the NHL’s decision to go back to Atlanta, a market that has already seen two failed attempts at sustaining a team. Reminiscing about his experience with the Bruins in Atlanta, Cherry added:
“I remember going there with the Boston Bruins. And we always had fights in there, but I don’t, I don’t understand it. I don’t understand why they’re going back to Atlanta.”
According to reports, the Board of Commissioners recently held a meeting where they approved the rezoning of The Gathering project and adopted a finalized Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
The decision paves the way for the construction of a mixed-use arena at the southernmost end of the country. Looking ahead, they’re also preparing a proposal aimed at securing NHL expansion for the new arena, potentially bringing a professional hockey team back to the region.
The apparent approval marks a crucial step in enhancing the local economy and sports culture in Forsyth County, with the community eagerly anticipating the potential impact of an NHL franchise in the area.
Don Cherry shared his thoughts on Team Canada’s shocking exit from WJC
Hockey legend Don Cherry weighed in on Team Canada’s shocking elimination from the World Juniors following a 4-3 loss to Czechia in the quarterfinals earlier this month.
Throughout the tournament, Canada struggled, managing to win only two out of five games played on home ice. Cherry emphasized the need for understanding, urging fans not to be too harsh on the young players.
“Don’t be too hard on the kids. They tried their best,” Don Cherry wrote on X. “They seemed tight all tournament. Hockey Canada has to get with it and hire full-time coaches for the World Jrs, Under 18, Under 17 and get some consistency.”
Cherry’s idea of bringing in full-time coaches presents a viable solution for Canada’s rebuilding efforts.
