NHL fans expressed strong criticism towards the Edmonton Oilers following allegations by former defenseman Sheldon Souray regarding the mistreatment of his life-threatening injury.

Souray shared a shocking story on the UnHammered podcast with former NHL enforcer Brantt Myhers. He talked about a severe wrist injury that completely changed his perspective on the Oilers.

The injury happened during a fight against the Flames’ Jeremy Ignila, pushed by Oilers then-coach Tom Renney. After sustaining the injury, Souray wanted to move to Los Angeles for surgery, but the team disagreed and had other plans.

Following that, it led to a dangerous infection in his arm, leading Sheldon Souray to intensive care shortly after the surgery.

Souray’s claims have sparked outrage among hockey fans on X/Twitter, highlighting concerns about how the Oilers handled his health situation. A fan responded to Souray’s accusation against the Edmonton Oilers, tweeting:

“Disgusting freakshow of an organization. Sell the team, and move them to kc. Enough of this”

Another fan joined the conversation and extended their support toward the Oilers:

“Wouldn’t happen today in Edmonton. Under new management”

“Dam just some ugly years of terrible management by the Oilers,” said another.

Here are some of the other top reactions to Shouray’s allegations of the Oilers mistreating his life-threatening wrist injury. Another tweeted:

“The main reason everyone was so annoyed at the oilers having draft lottery luck is because they were such a joke of an organization for about 10 years and didn’t deserve the top picks with how poorly they were run”

“Damn those were dark days. I’m so glad that there was a complete overhaul in the organization,” one X user opined.

“We knew something stunk about that entire situation. We loved Sheldon, and he was somewhat open about being screwed by the organization on an injury, but crazy to hear those details. Was in the corner when you went in hard from that Iginla trip. Scary stuff,” another fan opined.

Edmonton Oilers thought Sheldon Souray was faking his injury

NHL Defenseman Details Life-Threatening Injury

While the former defenseman was dealing with a challenging time in the intensive care unit, he revealed that an assistant trainer visited him and conveyed the Edmonton Oilers’ belief that Souray was pretending to be injured or ill to facilitate a trade out of Edmonton.

“He said ‘Just so you know the management thinks you’re faking this injury because you don’t want to play for the Oilers,'” claimed Souray.

Understandably, Sheldon Souray reacted with a strong sense of anger in response to the assistant trainer’s visit and the Oilers’ belief that he was faking his injury or illness.

“I told them all they could go f**k themselves.”

Following the contentious comments and stained relationship between Souray and the Edmonton Oilers, the repercussions were significant. Souray found himself demoted to the AHL and eventually parted ways with the club. Souray had a brief three-year sting with the Oilers, appearing in 144 games.
