In the preseason opener against the Detroit Red Wings, the Chicago Blackhawks showed strengths and weaknesses. The 19-year-old had a few good moments but also struggled in some parts in the loss to Red Wings.
He made a turnover at the offensive blue line. This mistake led to a breakaway goal for the Red Wings.
“A lot of sloppy plays and stuff for sure on both ends. But it’s all of our first games in four or five months, so to be expected a little I guess. There’s definitely a lot of areas to clean up,” Bedard said.
Reflecting on his performance, Bedard added:
“I feel like I did more conditioning than I’ve ever done and I still was pretty gassed.”
The Blackhawks lost 4-2, with both established players and those fighting for roster spots. Seth Jones and Alex Vlasic had mixed performances, but their spots on the team are safe. Younger players like Frank Nazar are under more pressure. Nazar struggled as his line had little offense and was heavily outshot.
Newcomer AJ Spellacy brought energy to the game. His aggressive play stood out against more cautious players. Spellacy’s hit on Lucas Raymond and his involvement in a scuffle showed his determination. This intensity is important for players competing for roster spots as the preseason competition heats up.
Connor Bedard calls for improvement in Blackhawks’ special teams as preseason begins

Connor Bedard noted the team needs to improve its special teams. The Blackhawks started well on the power play but faded later. Bedard stressed the importance of practice and game experience to build teamwork before the season starts.
“I think so. We got a couple days of practice in, but it’s always nice to get a game. We had some good moments, but then there were things (where) you want to get your reps in,” Bedard said (via nytimes.com).
“That’s what’s great about the preseason: You have the chance to do that and build that as the preseason goes on and, obviously, the actual season starts,” he added.
The game against the Red Wings was a learning opportunity. Bedard may make a mistake or two, but others need to make every play count. The Blackhawks must address their inconsistencies quickly. The preseason has just begun, and they will want to make a strong impression in the remaining games.
