HC Kris Knoblauch blames Edmonton Oilers’ ‘neglected defensive responsibilities’ against Kraken (Image Source: Imagn)
The Edmonton Oilers wrapped up their road trip to the Climate Pedge Arena with a disappointing 6-2 loss to the Seattle Kraken on Wednesday. Coach Kris Knoblauch shared his thoughts on the team’s performance, noting that they often neglected their defensive responsibilities, which led to the defeat.
Knoblauch pointed out that while the Oilers had some strong moments, especially in the second period, where they seemed to control the game, mistakes allowed the Kraken to score.
“I thought we carried most of the momentum in the second period but made mistakes that ended up in our net. That often happens when you have the puck as much as we did in the second period—you tend to neglect your defensive responsibilities, and they capitalized on that.

“In the third period, I don’t know, I think there was a little frustration. But overall, it was a good learning experience for us as we head into the regular season.”
When asked about the impact of conceding two quick goals after tying the game in the second period, Knoblauch acknowledged that it was a crucial moment. He emphasized the need for the team to be more assertive defensively, adding that such lapses cannot happen in the regular season.
“Both goals came off the rush, and our responsibilities were a little too passive. It’s the kind of stuff we can’t allow to happen in the regular season,” he added.
How Seattle Kraken downed Edmonton Oilers 6-2 in preseason
On Wednesday, the Seattle Kraken hosted the Edmonton Oilers at Climate Pledge Arena in a preseason clash. After a goalless first period, the two teams scored six goals between them in the second period.
Brandan Tanev put the Kraken in front at 5:52 of the second period. Less than two minutes later, Sane Wright doubled their lead. The Oilers bounced back with Leon Draisaitl’s strike from Connor McDavid’s assist on the powerplay, reducing the deficit.
Travis Dermott tied it for the Oilers before goals from Montour and Wriight under a minute restored the home team’s two-goal lead. Jaden Schwartz made it 5-2 at 14:48 before Will Borgen made it 6-2 for Seattle.
The Edmonton Oilers return for their last preseason matchup against the Vancouver Canucks at the Rogers Arena on Friday.
