The John Tavares Foundation reached a big goal at the 2024 Brighter Futures Gala. They raised $623,890 to support their work. The event took place on Thursday and featured many Toronto Maple Leafs players. Captain Auston Matthews attended, along with teammates Matthew Knies, Max Domi, Ryan Reaves and Joseph Woll.
Tavares captured the excitement of the evening in his Instagram post, saying:
“What an incredible night at the #BrighterFuturesGala2024!..”
Tavares thanked all the generous supporters, sponsors and donors who made the night successful. He noted that the funds would help children and families across Canada.
The evening included a great performance by the James Barker Band and inspiring speeches from special guests. Tavares also recognized the partnerships with various organizations that share the same goal of creating brighter futures.
John Tavares reflected on new role with Maple Leafs and supported Auston Matthews

On Sept. 23, John Tavares reflected on his new position with the Toronto Maple Leafs after stepping down as captain. In their first preseason game, he wore an “A” as an assistant captain. Tavares pointed out the strong relationship and mutual respect they share, expressing confidence in Auston Matthews’ ability to lead the team effectively. He believes Matthews is well-prepared for this role.
“I‘ve spoken a lot about what I think of him and obviously, the type of player and person and what he’s become and the opportunity for him to really step into this and take another step and continue on the way he’s been leading,” Tavares said (via The Hockey News. com).
Tavares acknowledged that not being captain feels unusual but affirmed his full support for Matthews.
“…I know it will be a little bit different, but I don’t think it changes a lot on how I approach the game, how I play and how I lead and how I can impact the group. So just kind of going about my business day to day, and like I said, excited about the group and supporting Auston,” Tavares added.
Tavares reiterated his desire to stay in Toronto as he nears the final year of his seven-year, $77 million contract. The Maple Leafs will begin the season against the Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 9, 2024.
