NFL: APR 25 2024 Draft

Kansas City Chiefs rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy — taken with the 28th overall selection of last month’s NFL Draft — started the team’s three-day rookie minicamp with a lowlight.

In a pure example of snap reactions on social media, a clip showing a pass bouncing off Worthy’s hands during a drill on Saturday created quite a stir.

Fortunately, the NFL Scouting Combine’s record holder for the fastest 40-yard dash time (at 4.21 seconds) rebounded with a strong effort over the next two days.

On Monday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid praised Worthy’s efforts. Official team reporter Matt McMullen’s recap of the minicamp credited Worthy with a very impressive Sunday — including a deep pass.

“Rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy had a strong practice. I counted six catches, including an impressive grab deep down the field in which he had to adjust to an underthrown pass. Worthy went on to catch passes at all three levels of the field during the practice.”

The team’s first-round selection has also impressed many of his new teammates. On Monday, backup quarterback Chris Oladokun — who threw many of the weekend’s passes — broke down the play McMullen mentioned.

“I was really eager to get that with him,” he recalled, “and he’s splitting the guy over the top. [Worthy] was already 50 yards down the field — and this is right after me getting out of a play fake — so I sort of saw him. I was like, ‘Let me just get him the ball!’ He ended up making a great catch for me.

“That’s going to be something I think he does really well in this offense.”

Now in his third season with Kansas City’s offense, Oladokun believes the wideout’s otherworldly speed will take some getting used to.

“You may just have to get the ball out a step or two earlier,” he observed. “The guys runs 4.21, so [you] definitely have to adjust with that.”

Other players with top-level speed are even marveling at Worthy’s velocity.

“Xavier is quick,” noted former rugby player Louis Rees-Zammit, who reportedly recorded a 4.43-second 40-yard dash earlier this spring. “There’s no surprise how he broke the record for the 40-yard dash. He’s looking great out there.”

Former Kansas State wide receiver Phillip Brooks — who joined the Chiefs last week as an undrafted free agent — competed against Worthy when their teams were Big 12 foes.

“Going against him,” said Brooks, “obviously, he’s super fast. I consider myself fast — but compared to him, I’ve got some work to do… I believe it pushes me to see him do his thing.”

Cornerback Kamal Hadden — the team’s sixth-round selection out of Tennessee — noticed more than the raw speed. The former Volunteer is happy they will be on the same team when the season begins.

“Xavier, he’s a great receiver,” he remarked. “The speed is one thing, but I feel like he runs good routes; he’s a great route runner. He’s a guy that can get open. I feel like he’s a guy that’s going to make a lot of plays in this league. He’s going to do his thing here.”

The accomplished defensive back believes that each can help the other in practice.

“It was just good to go up against him,” said Hadden. “I never played against him in college, — but I’ve seen him a lot, so it was a good ‘iron sharpens iron’ rep. I just want to take the whole thing — [to] just be appreciative that I can go against somebody like that to get me better, and I can also get him better as well.”

Soon, Worthy will be catching passes from the league’s best quarterback: Patrick Mahomes. While the face of the league wasn’t participating over the weekend, Oladokun confirmed that Mahomes is still getting the information he needs.

“It’s good,” he smiled, “to actually be the first one to call Pat and be like, ‘Hey man, Xavier Worthy is as fast as he is.’”
