The situation between Connor Bedard and Jeremy Roenick has just gotten interesting as Chris Chelios has stepped in to defend Bedard.
Blackhawks legend Chris Chelios may not be so offended by the fact that Chicago Blackhawks sophomore superstar Bedard didn’t come by and say “Hi”.
The Blackhawks team came by and greeted Denis Savard, Chris Chelios, and Jeremy Roenick the night of the Winter Classic which took place at Wrigley Field on New Year’s Eve.
While the Blackhawks would come away with a loss, 6-2 there was someone else in the building with hurt feelings.
That man is Blackhawks legend Jeremy Roenick, who was offended by the fact that Bedard wouldn’t show respect to him.
On his Snipes and Stripes Podcast Roenick exaggerated unnecessarily.
“All the players came up to me, [Chelios], and [Savard], except one.
That was Connor Bedard.
If we don’t have that respect to go up and fist bump, to say congratulations, how can you do it with your own teammates?
I’m not ripping on him in terms of his personality or anything like that.
If he’s going to be the captain of this team, there is a lot of things that he has to think about in terms of being that leader, being that captain, and unfortunately he dropped the ball.”
While Jeremy Roenick’s teammate and Blackhawks icon Chris Chelios has stepped into taking a different perspective. Chelios sees it as a matter of generations, as Bedard was raised differently which might explain the “cold shoulder” Roenick felt.
“Jeremy’s heart is in the right place, there’s no question about that.. He’s so excited to be back with the Blackhawks and involved in the Hawks’ Hall of Fame induction. I think, he might be stuck in the ’90s, somewhat like I am, and it’s just a generational thing. It’s nothing to do with Connor or any of the other younger players.”
“When I was raised, we were taught to shake people’s hands and look you in the eyes-that’s not the way it is (now).”
Traditions should be upheld in sports for many reasons, but re-evaluated when necessary.
While Roenick seems to have the right idea in mind, as building relationships and camaraderie is important in life. But his method of communication, and roasting Bedard in the media isn’t really a diplomatic way of handling it.
Instead he’s made it about himself, rather than enjoying the game and supporting an organization which helped make him the man he is today.
