The evening wasn’t just disappointing for DeRozan due to the game; his former friend, Canadian rapper Drake, was also in attendance. As DeRozan and his teammates were heading to the locker room after the loss, social media users who specialize in lip reading reported that Drake directed a harsh remark at DeRozan.
“F*** outta here, pussy,” Drake said, according to the lip readers, as DeRozan walked by him.
Despite the tensions, the night held special significance for the Raptors as they honored one of their all-time greats, Vince Carter. During the game, the Raptors retired Carter’s No. 15 jersey, making him the first player in franchise history to receive this honor.
The moment was bittersweet for DeRozan as Drake expressed his disapproval of the idea of the Raptors retiring DeRozan’s jersey. The Kings star spent the first nine years of his NBA career with the Raptors.
DeMar DeRozan Discusses The Emotional Disconnect Since Leaving The Raptors
DeMar DeRozan left the Raptors in 2018 after the Raptors traded him to the San Antonio Spurs as part of a deal that brought Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green to Toronto. While Drake publicly expressed his disapproval of the idea of retiring DeRozan’s jersey, DeRozan took a moment to reflect on his emotional journey since leaving the Raptors.
“I think ever since I kind of like, like left Toronto, like I never found like an emotional connection to where I was at in the sense of like I needed to like… I never had that,” DeRozan said.
Despite the ups and downs in his journey, DeRozan is off to a strong start with the Sacramento Kings. In their recent game against the Raptors, he scored 33 points, grabbed three rebounds, and dished out four assists. So far this season, DeRozan is averaging 25.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game.
