On Saturday, New York Mets starting pitcher Kodai Senga talked about the challenge that lies ahead for him and his team as they are set to take on the LA Dodgers in the NLCS. Senga has been named the starter for the opening game of the series, just like he was Carlos Mendoza’s pitcher of choice in Game 1 against the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLDS.

The Mets are heading into the game off the back of a 3-1 series victory. On the other hand, the NLDS took all five games to decide the winner, with the Dodgers edging the San Diego Padres 3-2.

Speaking to the press, Senga had a simple but amusing response when asked what his plan of action was against Shohei Ohtani.

“[4:24] I don’t think any pitcher would reveal we’re how they’re going to approach an opposing hitter at this point.” Kodai Senga said via a translator.

Kodai Senga talks about fitness, performing in playoff games for the Mets

Kodai Senga has struggled with injuries this season and it was a surprise to see him chosen as the starter for the series opener against the Phillies and now the Dodgers. In Game 1 of the NLDS, Senga pitched only two innings before he was replaced by David Peterson as the Mets are likely easing him back into the action.

Senga also talked about whether he felt he was ready to pitch longer in the game against the Dodgers on Saturday.

“[1:58] As long as the switch stays on (as long as they keep me on the mound), I’m good for whatever.”

He then discussed how important it was for him to perform well for his team, having already missed a large chunk of the campaign due to injury.

“[5:09] More so than being glad or happy [to be here], there’s definitely tension inside myself, compared to the other pitchers that have fought throughout the year. I haven’t been able to do that, so I really need to be able to continue to contribute and do my job the following games.”

When fit, Kodai Senga has proven that he is a strong performer for the Mets. It will be interesting to see how he will fare and set the tone for his team in the crucial NLCS opener at Dodger Stadium.
