Bruins fans bash Jake DeBrusk after $38.5 million Canucks forward confesses to requesting trades out of Boston (Image Credit: IMAGN)
Boston Bruins fans slammed former player Jake DeBrusk after he confessed to requesting trades out of Boston during a conversation on “The Cam and Strick Podcast.”
DeBrusk joined the Vancouver Canucks at this year’s free agency, inking a seven-year, $38.5 million contract. He faced a challenging period during the 2021 playoffs with the Bruins when he was benched as a healthy scratch.
This experience led DeBrusk to seek a fresh start and request a trade for the first time at the end of the season. In November of that year, though, DeBrusk once again made his trade request public.
Bruins fans flooded X/Twitter with fiery responses to DeBrusk’s bombshell about requesting to be traded out of Boston:
“What a spoiled brat. He played with some of the greatest players,” one fan said.
Another fan chimed in:
“Another bust pick by Sweeney. Glorified 3rd liner that disappears for 75% of the season.”
“See? The bum never wanted to be here. Now hopefully all the Jans and Stans can let it go. He wanted 7M a year to score 15 goals. Lysell will clear his production in 1 season,” one X user said.
Here are some more top reactions from fans on X:
“To the people going crazy in the comments, this was known? He’s referring to the 2020 offseason. Ended up having three good-great years after. Always wish he was a bit more consistent but had so many awesome moments as a Bruin. Will miss his game,” one fan opined.
“Well, safe to say that DeBrusk won’t be missed here in Boston. And if he REALLY thinks he’s gonna win something in Vancouver with the Canucks, he is sorely mistaken. DeBrusk will forever be a mid player. And soft as well,” another fan commented.
“Don’t have to cheer 4 him anymore,” a fan wrote.
Jake DeBrusk was ‘uncomfortable’ when news broke out
DeBrusk emphasized that his decision to seek a trade stemmed from his NHL career, aiming for longevity and improved opportunities in the league. He was drafted No. 14 overall by the Boston Bruins in the 2015 NHL draft.
DeBrusk also said he felt “uncomfortable” when the news of him wanting a trade out of Boston broke out:
“When it came out, it was very uncomfortable,” DeBrusk said. “It was very uncomfortable going into the rink the next day and talk to the guys in the room. The guys that were there were the biggest reason why I got out of that situation, that side of things. They had my back; they were with me through it all and they were all good with me.
“They understood why in the room, they knew it was just me trying to find a better fit for my career to have a longer NHL career and a better chance at something,” he added.
As the season progressed, Jake DeBrusk seemingly had a change of heart. He decided to retract his trade request and committed to remaining with the Boston Bruins, going on to play for three seasons with the Black and Gold before joining the Canucks in free agency this offseason.
