MANILA, Philippines – Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III has acknowledged and subsequently dismissed circulating whispers of a new attempt to oust him from the Senate leadership, just before the legislative body resumed its sessions on Tuesday.
Sotto, who has faced similar speculation in the past, brushed off the latest rumors as a “common” story that the Senate frequently encounters.
“There are one or two stories about someone talking to others—that’s all,” he said, referencing the latest gossip he heard from a colleague.
Despite the rumors, Sotto expressed confidence in his position, stating that the Senate presidency is ultimately entrusted to the chamber’s collective will.
“As for me, I leave it up to our peers… The Senate president should always leave it to the wisdom and the trust and confidence of his colleagues,” Sotto said in an interview.
The Senate leader did not discuss the number of senators allegedly involved in the plot, noting that the alleged plotters would simply deny their involvement. He also stated that the exact reason why some senators might be seeking his ouster this time was not clear. “Nothing. Nothing was mentioned,” Sotto commented.

Lacson’s Return and Leadership Dynamics
The latest round of coup rumors surfaces as Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo Lacson is set to be re-elected as chairman of the powerful Senate Blue Ribbon Committee later in the plenary session.
Lacson had previously warned that his return to the chairmanship might jeopardize the majority bloc’s support, or even the Senate presidency itself.
Last month, Lacson stepped down as head of the anti-corruption committee, citing disappointment among some colleagues regarding the “direction” of the panel’s investigation into the massive flood control projects scandal. That probe allegedly involves various government officials, private contractors, and even some sitting lawmakers, including senators.
Sotto’s ability to maintain his leadership is seen by many as directly tied to the internal dynamics and shifting alliances resulting from the high-stakes Blue Ribbon investigation.
