Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid continues to hold a special place in his heart for young superfan Ben Stelter, who passed away in August 2022 at just 6 years old after battling brain cancer.
Stelter’s inspirational battle and infectious personality captured the hearts of McDavid and the entire Oilers organization. He was first introduced to McDavid in September 2021 and went on to meet the whole team in March 2022, lining up with the players for the national anthem as the Scotiabank Skater.
“For anybody that met Ben, he had such a personality,” McDavid said (per NHL.com).
“He was a 5, 6-year-old kid and had so much life and so much personality, he was just destined to do big things. Even though he’s no longer with us today, you can tell that his legacy lives on and will live on for an extremely long time.”
The inaugural Ben’s Cup minor hockey tournament is held in his honor this holiday season. The Ben Stelter Foundation also carries on his memory by supporting cancer research, treatment and funding.
“The life he lived and the energy that he brought, and the personality that he had,” McDavid said. “He was a special little guy and we miss him.”.” McDavid added.
The foundation’s work, coupled with events like Ben’s Cup, ensures that his memory lives on in meaningful ways.
Connor McDavid supports Ben Stelter Foundation
Connor McDavid made a special appearance at Ottewell School as part of a fundraising effort for the Ben Stelter Foundation. In total, nearly $74,000 was raised, surpassing the amount from the previous year.
McDavid was impressed by the energy and efforts of the students. He noted how the awareness and funds raised through events like this are helping support the Stelter family and the foundation’s goal of bringing proton therapy to treat cancer to Canada.
“The support for Ben, his family, and the foundation, it’s been amazing to see,” McDavid remarked during his visit on Dec. 13.
“It’s getting bigger and better than I think anyone could have imagined and we’re hoping to bring proton therapy to Canada and that would be such a big thing.”
This initiative showcases how the legacy of Ben Stelter continues to inspire positive action in the Edmonton community, with Connor McDavid’s involvement helping to amplify the foundation’s important mission.
