NHL: Nashville Predators at Minnesota Wild – Source: Imagn
Minnesota Wild veteran Marcus Foligno squared off against Nashville Predators blue liner Luke Schenn. Both combatants headlined a spirited bout in which haymakers flew left and right. The altercation took place during the first period of the Wild-Predator matchup on Saturday night.
The fight was pretty much even until Scheen unleashed a flurry of blows on Marcus Foligno, neutralizing his attack. After a lengthy altercation, the pugilists grappled until the officials stepped in to break up the fisticuffs.
Here’s a look at the outrageous action:
The bout could be scored as a split decision in favor of Schenn, but Marcus Foligno held his own during the fight. Considering the rivalry between the Wild and the Predators, the Foligno-Scheen bout became another episode in a long list of confrontations.
It’s worth pointing out that this bout was not the first between the two veterans, as they had squared off in November 2018. Foligno and Schenn, then playing for the Anaheim Ducks, had duked it out. Six years later, the two players met to settle an old score.
Marcus Foligno pointless in overtime win over Predators
On the ice, the Wild edged the Predators 3-2 in overtime. Jared Spurgeon got the game-winner for the Wild one minute into the overtime frame. The goal capped a two-point game for Spurgeon. Meanwhile, Marcus Foligno went pointless in the game. Foligno has registered four goals and as many assists for eight points in 24 games this season.
With the win, the Wild extended their winning streak to three. The club is now tied with the Winnipeg Jets for first place in the Central Division with 36 points. The Jets were idle on Saturday night and will square off against the Dallas Stars on Sunday night.
During the Wild‘s three-game winning streak, they’ve gotten wins over the Chicago Blackhawks and the Buffalo Sabres. The win against the Sabres on Wednesday night was a hard-fought affair, which the Wild took 1-0. Filip Gustavsson made 39 saves for a shutout in that game.
On Saturday night, Gustavsson was at it again, getting 25 saves in the win. The Swedish netminder has 11 wins on the season to go with a 2.05 GAA and a stellar .929 SV%.
The Wild will look to extend their winning streak when they take on the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night at the Xcel Energy Center.
