Martina Navratilova agreed with famed author JK Rowling’s criticism of “once-respected human rights organisation” Amnesty International. Rowling was outraged by the organization’s involvement in a controversial transgender inclusion and gender recognition case in the UK.
The case of For Women Scotland v Scottish Ministers is a critical one because it challenges the definition of “woman” under the Equality Act. Specifically, the Scottish Supreme Court is being asked to decide whether a person with a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC), which legally affirms their gender as female, should be considered a “woman” under the Act.
Amnesty International has intervened in this case, supporting the current legal framework that allows for legal gender recognition. The organization stresses that protecting the rights of trans women does not threaten the rights of biological women but rather upholds fundamental human rights.
On the other hand, JK Rowling and Martina Navratilova are among those who believe that including trans women with GRCs in the definition of “woman” could compromise the rights and protections afforded to biological women.
Before Amnesty International’s involvement in the case, Rowling emphasized that regardless of the ruling, the definition of a woman would remain unchanged. Later, reacting to the news about the organization’s involvement, Rowling wrote on X:
“A truly despicable move from a once-respected human rights organisation, which now openly champions the elitist, first world notion of ‘gender identity’ over biological sex, the basis on which females across the globe are oppressed.”
American tennis icon, Navratilova, reshared Rowling’s post and agreed with her, writing:
“Ditto 1 million times!!!”

In the English County of Isle of White, a 53-year-old person named Kelsea Broaddfoot was found by the police in an intoxicated state with her pants pulled down to her ankles. An X user reacted to the news and claimed that Broadfoot was a “man” and it was an “insult” to women to call him one.
Martina Navratilova reshared the X user’s post and wrote:
“Exactly what I said years ago- all of a sudden we will see a spike in “women’s” crime. When it’s males doing them still.”
In the comment section of her post, the former World No. 1 was labeled “anti trans.” However, she clarified her position stating:
“You said I was anti trans. I am not anti trans- I am pro women. Pro women sex based spaces. That is not anti anything.”
The 68-year-old has been a vocal advocate for the exclusion of transgender persons in women-based spaces, especially sports.
