LeBron James’ Potential Retirement Timeline: How The Lakers Star’s Son Bryce James Motivates Him To Keep Playing?
Los Angeles Lakers star forward LeBron James is in the twilight of his career. In the 2024-25 season, LeBron, who is featuring in his joint-record 22nd NBA season, and his son Bronny James became the first father-son duo to play in the league together. However, the four-time NBA champion will turn 40 next month, raising speculations over his retirement.
The 39-year-old forward has shown no signs of stopping this season as he recorded his third straight triple-double in the Lakers’ win against the Memphis Grizzlies. King James is averaging 24.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 9.4 assists per game this season.
Recently, NBA Insider Shams Charania offered his opinion on the potential retirement timeline of LeBron James. “[LeBron James] is going to be 40 years old next month,” Charania told Stephen A. Smith on First Take. “My sense is next season could potentially be his last season in the NBA.”
The insider also mentioned that the NBA’s all-time scoring leader could continue for a year or two due to a special case involving his younger son, Bryce James.
Will Bryce James Keep Father LeBron James On The Court?
LeBron James’ youngest son, Bryce James, is currently a senior in high school and is 17. He will be eligible for the NBA Draft after two years, i.e., in the 2026 NBA Draft. However, LeBron will turn 41 or 42 by then, possibly making it difficult for him to perform at the elite level. “Could he play another season after that, in 2026 or 2027? Potentially. Bryce James, his youngest son, class of 2025, maybe Bryce James will keep him around an extra year or two,” Charania added.
The NBA insider concluded that LeBron could retire after next season’s All-Star game in Los Angeles. “But I do think next season, All-Star game in (Los Angeles), there might be some good momentum there for that,” he said.
LeBron is showing great form, registering his career-high three-point shooting percentage at 45.9. The four-time NBA MVP powered the Lakers to three straight wins and clinch the sixth spot in the Western Conference standings with a 7-4 record.
