The Toronto Maple Leafs laid an egg on home ice against the Ottawa Senators and head coach Craig Berube wasn’t having any of it, leaving no man spared.
After 3 superb victories in a row against divisional rivals, the Maple Leafs were unable to make it a 4th straight win against the Senators. In fact, it wasn’t even a close affair, with their provincial rivals taking it to them from the moment the puck dropped.
The Senators brought their A-game last night as they outshot the Leafs 17-9 after 20 minutes, including a robust 13-1 advantage through the first 11 minutes. To make matters worse, they carried a 35-18 edge after 2 periods and ultimately paced the game with 41 shots towards Anthony Stolarz.
All the damage was done within the first 24 minutes of the game with the Senators scoring the game’s opening goal 41 seconds into the first period and then scoring twice in a span of 43 seconds at the on-set of the second period.
Craig Berube, not known to hold his feelings in, let his team have it during a TV timeout, where he essentially ripped them all to shreds:
For a performance as bleak as this one, not much was needed to be said either:
Perhaps this could be chalked up as a bad game. It happens every once in awhile, but without Auston Matthews in the lineup, the top guns were MIA tonight. Oliver Ekman-Larsson was a minus-3, Max Domi, William Nylander, and Morgan Rielly were all minus-2, and Nylander, Mitch Marner, John Tavares, and Matthew Knies combined for just 10 shots.
Berube was rather complimentary of his team’s effortover the last week, especially after their victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night. Unfortunately it didn’t last long after last night’s blunder.
The 9-6-2 Maple Leafs won’t have much time to dwell about this one as they head to nation’s capital to play the Washington Capitals tonight. It should be a spirited affair for a variety of reasons and the Maple Leafs will need to bring their A-game from the get-go with Alexander Ovechkin and company on fire over their last 10 games.
