NHL fans divided as Rangers make Barclay Goodrow move despite veteran’s reported disinterest in move to San Jose Sharks
NHL fans on social media were divided over the New York Rangers’ decision to place two-time Stanley Cup winner Barclay Goodrow on waivers, despite the veteran forward’s reported disinterest in joining the San Jose Sharks.
The Blueshirts made a move on Tuesday by placing Goodrow on waivers, making him available to be claimed by any other team in the league. The Sharks came forward and helped the Rangers by claiming the remaining three years of the contract that pays the veteran forward $3,641,667 annually.
The move benefited the Rangers by allowing them to free up salary cap space and potentially make other roster changes or additions. According to the NY Post’s Larry Brooks, Goodrow was reportedly unimpressed with the Blueshirts’ decision and was not interested in joining the Sharks, as he had included them on his 15-team no-trade list.
Fans on X/Twitter were left with mixed reactions about Goodrow being disinterested in joining the Sharks.
One fan expressed:
“Typical classless org.”
Another fan chimed in with their opinion:
“It’s the business. Drury can’t worry about how the player feels about the actions he takes.”
“Maybe don’t get waived then? I know this is kind of speculation, but if it is true, man… how he isn’t just grateful someone wants to pay his salary to play in the NHL? Seems wild to me,” one opined.
Here are some more reactions from fans on X:
“Going from President’s Trophy winning team to last place in the NHL would make anyone upset,” one commented.
“bad move by NYR, bad look for other players who will remember how they treated one of their player. Hughes has done the opposite at times, trying his best to get a player into a good situation,” another X user posted.
“Good. Drurys job is to put the best team he can on the ice Not to be their friend or to be liked,” posted another.
Sharks claim Barclay Goodrow despite no-trade list inclusion

According to the report by Larry Brooks, there is a widespread belief that Goodrow had included the Sharks on his 15-team no-trade list that Blueshirts GM Chris Drury got around by placing the veteran forward on waivers:
After speaking to multiple sources on Wednesday, there is widespread belief that Barclay Goodrow had included the Sharks on his 15-team, no-trade list that GM Chris Drury got around by placing No. 21 on waivers, where San Jose exercised the first claim to take the two-time Cup-winner,” Brooks said [via NY Post].
“We’re told that Goodrow’s 15-trade list included teams in less-than-desirable locations and those who are not contenders. San Jose would fit into that last category. But the 31-year-old’s feelings did not enter into this.”
Barclay Goodrow was re-claimed by the Sharks, the team with whom he began his NHL career, after signing for them as an undrafted player in 2014.
