The captain has been ruled out for tonight’s game against Boston, but the latest update makes it sounds like it could be for longer.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced that captain Auston Matthews will not be available for tonight’s contest against the Boston Bruins as he is considered day to day due to an upper-body injury.
The team jumped on the ice for morning practice without Matthews with projected lines looking like the matchup against the Bruins could be a tough one.
Max Domi moved up to the top line at practice and Pontus Holmberg, a healthy scratch on Sunday, was moved to third line centre.
What’s even tougher to swallow are the words from head coach Craig Berube who commented on Matthews’ status after the skate, hinting at the possibility that the captain could miss more than tonight’s game, per Terry Koshan.
“He’s [Matthews] fighting through it a bit. It’s something that’s been lingering.”
The Leafs’ bench boss did however make sure to specifically that Matthews’ current ailment does not have anything to do with his previous wrist injury.
Matthews be evaluated daily and hasn’t been ruled out for Friday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings.
Yet.
The star forward played in Sunday’s 2-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild, notching an assist in 22:12 minutes of ice time. So far this season, Matthews has five goals and 11 points in 13 games.
