Sophia Urista, the singer who shocked the world by peeing on a fan mid-concert, has Miley Cyrus to thank for her big break.
Brass Against frontwoman Sophia Urista has been the lead singer of the band for years.
And over the weekend, Urista made headlines after an incident at a concert in which she peed on a fan.
Who is Brass Against singer Sophia Urista?
Born in 1985, Sophia Urista is from Detroit, Michigan, The Sun reports.
She was a contestant on the US version of The Voice in 2016, after being chosen by judge at the time, Miley Cyrus.
According to her The Voice biography, Sophia comes from a conservative family and was a pre-med student before she pursued a career in music.
When she was 21, she moved to New York with only $700 to her name and began her life as a performer.
Sophia has been engaged to Peloton instructor, Jess King, since 2020. The singer proposed to her longtime girlfriend after the premiere of the music video for the song she wrote about King, entitled Everything About You.
The couple are reportedly focused on family planning, with each of them allegedly wanting to eventually carry a child.
What happened at the recent Brass Against concert?
On Thursday, November 11, 2021, Sophia Urista peed on a fan on stage at a Brass Against concert.
The band was performing at the Welcome to Rockville festival in Daytona Beach, Florida, when the incident occurred.
In video footage shared of the event, viewers can see a male fan welcomed onto the stage. He lies down, and what looks like a can is placed on his forehead.
Sophia then unbuttoned her pants and squatted over the man’s face, before she let out a stream of urine.
After the man stood up, he spewed pee in the direction of the audience.
The band has since taken to social media to apologise, but many fans have shared their disappointment following the incident.
In a statement issued via social media platforms, Brass Against wrote:
“We had a great time last night at Welcome to Rockville. Sophia got carried away. That’s not something the rest of us expected, and it’s not something you’ll see again at our shows. Thanks for bringing it last night, Daytona.”
What have fans said about the incident?
Comments have been turned off on the Instagram post of the band’s statement, but fans have taken to commenting on their other photos.
One wrote: “Now is the urinating on people a VIP experience?”
Another added: “Where do I sign up for VIPEE?”
On Twitter, one user responded to Brass Against’s statement, writing: “She did nothing wrong it was metal as f**k!”
Another said: “Man, @sophiaurista is the second coming of GG Allin. I applaud the f**k out her. We DESPERATELY needed another controversial ‘rock’ figure, irrespective of political views.”
Formed in 2017, Brass Against is a collective of artists, led and curated by Brad Hammonds.
The band came together to protest against the political climate of the world. Known as a brass protest band, they have done covers of Rage Against The Machine, Tool, and Audioslave.
On April 10, 2020, the band debuted their first original music, with Sophia as the lead vocalist.
“This EP marks our first foray into writing after doing interpretations of others’ songs for the last two years,” Hammonds said at the time.
The self-titled EP features songs like Pull The Trigger and Blood On The Other.
