The Harry Potter author has taken to social media to express outrage

JK Rowling has raged on social media after it emerged female athletes have lost a staggering 890 medals to transgender opponents.

A report from the United Nations has studied 29 sports to look into the data.

The study, named ‘Violence against women and girls in sports’ said that ‘policies implemented by international federations and national governing bodies’ had allowed athletes born male to compete in women’s sporting categories’.

It also argues that athletes born male had gender specific attributes which were advantageous in certain sports, such as higher strength.

This, it’s claimed, has resulted in the ‘loss of fair opportunity’ for biological women.

The findings were presented by Reem Alsalem, the UN special rapporteur on violence against women and girls, at the UN General Assembly earlier this month.

Over 600 female athletes have lost over 890 medals across 29 sports to their transgender rivals.

And Rowling, sharing a report from the Daily Mail on the subject, has now vented her fury on social media.

“Over 890 medals, across 29 sports, stolen from women by men,” she said.

A number of trans athletes have won medals competing in female categories.

Canadian star Veronica Ivy became the first transgender cycling champion when she secured gold at the UCI Women’s Masters Track Cycling Championships back in 2019.

And Lia Thomas sparked controversy in the United States by becoming the first trans athlete to win the highest US national college title while competing for the University of Pennsylvania in 2022.

Alsalem’s report acknowledges that some trans athletes take testosterone suppressors.

However, she believes biological men retain a number of ‘performance advantages’ in other sports.

She has called on the UN to provide stronger protection for women and girls in the sport.

And the rise of trans athletes isn’t the only issue, with the report saying women have other issues to deal with when it comes to sport too.

This includes social stereotypes, pervasive sexism and limited access to training facilities.

JK Rowling has publicly spoken out about protecting same-sex spaces PAShe said: “Women and girls already have many odds stacked against them that impede their equal and effective participation in sports.

“In addition, their ability to play sport in conditions of safety, dignity and fairness has been further eroded by the intrusion of males who identify as female in female-only sports and related spaces.”
