NHL fans on social media roasted Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares for reportedly promoting $239.99 amulets claiming protection from Wi-Fi and evil energies, which are being sold by Russell Brand.
According to Jesse Marshall of The Athletic, Tavares and Russell Brand are marketing the same mysterious amulet, claiming it possesses healing properties and the ability to protect users from Wi-Fi.
The promotion is backed by individuals who believe in mind control, a concept that Marshall humorously noted was not something he expected to see in the NHL realm.
The unusual nature of the endorsement has sparked a wave of reactions from fans, who took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their thoughts and amusement. One tweeted:
“It also prevents Stanley Cups.”
Another chimed in:
“Mind control is working on a level we dont even know bro. To think radiation from certain things doesnt happen, also dumb; why u wear a vest for xray then? If ppl live happier lives thinking gimmicks work, let them. Try thinking instead of playing bingo.”
“Clearly the mind control thing works if Tavares is still saying he is the captain,” one humorously wrote.
Here are some of the other top reactions on X:
“Seen some wild stuff over the years, like the Toskala pad burning story and the entire Bryzgalov era, but this is truly one of the more bizarre rabbit holes I’ve come across,” another chimed in.
“He’s trying real hard to make up for the income he’s going to lose to taxes,” another tweeted.
“Professional athletes selling unproven products and services to the masses is almost as old as prostitution itself,” one opined.
John Tavares is back in practice after illness
John Tavares returned to practice on Tuesday after missing Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins and Monday’s session due to illness, according to Nick Barden of The Hockey News.
Fans can expect Tavares to be back on the lineup for the Leafs’ Wednesday’s matchup against the LA Kings at home. During the recent practice, John Tavares skated on the second line and participated in the top power-play unit.
The 34-year-old has scored one goal in two matches for the Leafs this season.
