Without Cus D’Amato, who knows where Mike Tyson would have ended up? Like in the modern day, Mike helped Francis Ngannou transition into boxing – Cus helped a young Mike transition from a life on the streets to boxing fame. However, boxing moves weren’t the only thing Mike learned from the late legendary trainer. In a recent interview, the former heavyweight champion reveals life lessons Cus taught him.
As it turns out, Mike Tyson recently appeared in the VAULT Conference Interview with Patrick Bet-David, discussing the importance of a mentor in life. During the interview, as the conversation flowed, the audience was given the opportunity to ask Mike whatever they wanted. So, utilizing the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, an audience member asked Mike about the life lessons his relationship with Cus taught him.
Cus D’Amato taught Mike Tyson not to compete with anyone else
Responding to the audience member, Mike Tyson suggested Cus taught him to stop competing against others. Rather, to compete against oneself because that’s how people improve on an emotional level. “Wanting to get the best out of yourself, not competing with anyone else but you and that’s how we improve as a person, improving ourselves to an emotional level,” said Mike.
He went on to suggest that competing against oneself can make people feel superior but in a positive way, where everybody is superior and equal. “Sometimes you can feel superior. But it’s superior in a good way cuz we sharing a lot of love, and everybody’s going to be superior in that same level cuz that’s what it’s all about everybody being equal,” said Mike. While Mike reminisced about what Cus taught him, the heavyweight champion recently tried to fill Cus’ shoes.
The student becomes the master
Not so long ago, Francis Ngannou went toe-to-toe with the formidable Tyson Fury in a battle of the heavyweights. While nobody believed in Ngannou, one man saw the potential of Ngannou’s raw power. It was none other than Mike Tyson. He trained Ngannou as Cus once trained him, helping him hone his skills.
In what turned out to be a night of horrors for Tyson Fury, Ngannou nearly won the fight. In an old clip from his training camp, Mike can be seen helping Ngannou perfect his move in the ring. Top Rank shared the clip on X (formerly Twitter) with a caption that read, “Class is in session with Iron Mike.”
Decades after Cus passed to the world beyond, Mike Tyson sheds light on the lessons he learned from Cus beyond the lightning-fast moves. However, what do you think about Cus’ life lesson? Do you think Mike would have become a world champion without Cus?
