Fresh off of winning an NBA championship, the ownership group of the Boston Celtics has decided to put the team up for sale. In the early stages of this saga, one insider noted a famous entrepreneur as a possible suitor.
During a recent episode of his podcast, Bill Simmons touched on the Celtics going up for sale. He claimed to have inside knowledge on the topic and named Jeff Bezos as someone who could step up and buy the iconic franchise.
“The Celtics are for sale. And I happen to have a bunch of information on this, because this is a huge, huge topic right now,” Simmons said. “In the last few days, there’s been some, I think, legitimate, buzz about Jeff Bezos buying the Celtics. And I think it’s real. I think he’s going to be one of the suitors.”

Bezos, most known for founding Amazon, has the financial capital to pull off a deal like this. As of 2024, his net worth is $195.7 billion.
As one of the NBA’s most iconic franchises, the Boston Celtics are going to command a high price tag. During his rant about Bezos buying the team, Simmons stated that the league wants the Celtics to sell for six billion dollars to help with expansion in the future.

While Bill Simmons named Jeff Bezos, he is not the only name connected to the sale of the Boston Celtics. Another group is one with ties to LA Lakers star LeBron James.
Earlier this month, Fenway Sports Group was named as another group that could end up buying the Celtics. This would make LeBron a partial owner, as he has a 1% stake in the company.
“Boston Red Sox Owner Fenway Sports Group and RedBird Capital that partner closely with LeBron James are seriously considering bidding for the Celtics, sources close to the situation said.”
If FSG is able to buy the Boston Celtics, it would put LeBron in some elite company. He’d be the partial owner of a franchise while still playing in the league.
In recent years, LeBron has touched on wanting to be an owner when his career comes to an end. However, he has his sights set on a possible new franchise in Las Vegas.
With names like FSG and Bezos reportedly in the mix, the sale of the Celtics could end up being a high-stakes bidding war.
