Jay Rosehill says Maple Leafs’ captaincy change won’t disrupt team dynamics (Source: Imagn)
The Toronto Maple Leafs have decided to remove John Tavares as captain and give the role to Auston Matthews. The change has generated a lot of discussion.
Former Leafs player Jay Rosehill shared his thoughts on the impact of this move in a video on X (formerly Twitter). He thinks the locker room dynamics won’t change as much as some people expect. He noted that Tavares has led by example rather than being very vocal and that Matthews taking over as captain might not disrupt the team.
Rosehill also mentioned that the captaincy change is part of a bigger effort to improve the team. He said:
“The media and market will make more of an issue out of it than it really is. The conversation with John would have been tough the first time he addresses the room, but John is a consummate professional and will handle it just fine.”
According to Rosehill, the change might be tough for Tavares personally, but it is necessary for the team.
Rosehill concluded that the captaincy change would likely not cause major problems for the team, and that it could be a practical move to address team dynamics and performance.
Auston Matthews will be Toronto Maple Leafs captain for 2024-25 season

Auston Matthews will be the Toronto Maple Leafs’ new captain for the 2024-25 season. The official announcement is expected on Aug. 14.
Matthews joined the Leafs in 2016 and has been a key player. He has 649 points in 562 games. He has been an alternate captain for five seasons and signed a four-year extension worth $13.25 million per season in August last year.
John Tavares, the captain since 2019, will step down as he enters the final year of his contract. Tavares will turn 34 in September and has 1,040 points in 1,109 games. Before joining the Leafs, he was the captain of the New York Islanders for five years.
The Maple Leafs will start their season on Oct. 9 against the Montreal Canadiens. They’ll play their home opener on Oct. 12 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
