Mitch Marner is facing backlash after his wife posted a photo of him and their dog on a Sea-Doo last week, while teammates like Max Domi are posting workout montages and receiving love and adoration for it.

It has been an off-season full of criticism for Marner after having another underwhelming post-season which spread into rumours about the possibility of him being traded.

Last week, Marner’s wife, Stephanie, posted a photo of Marner and their dog on a Sea-Doo and once the photo made it to ‘X’, fans reacted how you would expect them to.

“Wonder if he rides around the perimeter of the lake too,” commented one user, referencing Marner’s preference to play on the outside during the playoffs when checking is much tighter.

The optics of Marner playing around on his pleasure craft are much worse after a number of posts by his teammate Max Domi grinding away in the gym as he prepares for the upcoming season. The difference in priorities appears to have aggrevated Leaf fans, given that Marner is supposed to be a superstar and is being paid $10.9M this upcoming season compared to Domi’s $3.75M.

“Sure looks like a guy working hard for next season,” commented another user on Domi’s workout montage post.

Like William Nylander last season, Marner is entering the final year of his contract and as Nylander did before inking his extension, Marner will likely put up some ridiculous numbers to quiet his critics while also raising his market value. With training camp set to commence in just over a month, players should be returning to Toronto to begin ‘Captain’s skates’ over the next couple of weeks. Marner and Domi should be expected to partake.
