The Philadelphia Eagles survived a shootout in their season-opener against the Green Bay Packers in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Philadelphia won 34-29, getting their season off to a good start. Running back Saquon Barkley was the star of the show as he marked his debut for his new team with three touchdowns.

The victory was sweet but the performance left a lot to be desired. Franchise icon Jason Kelce echoed that sentiment. He was ecstatic about the win but voiced his concerns about the team’s sloppiness on X:

“Eagles 1-0, great first game of the year against a very good Packers team. Sloppy game, but when they were executing man, they are rolling. Lot of good in this one, clean up some of the first game jitters on O, and stop the explosives on D and we are rolling baby!!”

Neither team looked comfortable on the slick field at the Corinthians Arena. However, most of the Eagles’ issues were self-inflicted.

Jalen Hurts’ chemistry with Jason Kelce’s replacement needs work before Eagles face Falcons in Week 2

The game on Friday was the Eagles’ first in 13 years without Jason Kelce on the roster. New center Cam Jurgens would’ve hoped to have a clean game to endear himself to Philadelphia’s faithful, but it didn’t go as planned.

The center had a breakdown in communication with Jalen Hurts in the first quarter and snapped the ball before the quarterback was ready to receive it, leading to a turnover.

Late in the game, the duo had another lapse in communication, causing the first failed ‘Tush Push’ of the season. Thankfully for Philadelphia, Barkley was in a position to latch onto the loose ball and avoid another turnover.

The second error was primarily Hurts’ fault, as were the two errant passes that were intercepted. The quarterback made uncharacteristic mistakes that on another day could’ve proven costly.

The defense won’t be too pleased about its performance either. They gave up a 33-yard touchdown run and a 70-yard catch and run for another six points to Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed.

Despite the lapses, the team is returning from Sao Paulo with a win and has nine days to analyze and rectify their mistakes before they host the Atlanta Falcons at Lincoln Financial Field in Week 2.
